A few years ago I was prescribed hearing aids but, as is often the way with me, I eventually got out of the habit of wearing them and some while later they fell into that large black hole where unused things end up … lost.
Last summer I got an ear infection and was hit with a triple whammie.
Not only has my hearing been severely impaired since then, but my body reacted wrongly to the infection and kindly gave me arthritis in my hands. The infection itself also left me with quite nasty vertigo meaning that I was virtually housebound for over 9 months. I could mention the additional deep pitched tinnitus which stops me getting to sleep at night, but let’s not gripe.
It’s taken the NHS a while to get around to it, but today I had an appointment to get new hearing aids. Whoopie !!
These things are bat-shit crazy, and sooo much better than I remember the old ones to be. They are even bluetooth compatible so I can answer the phone if I’m in another room which, given her perfect sense of timing, often happens when wifey calls.
I’ve yet to test them out with the tv, but am hopeful I might now be able to reduce the tv volume from 100/100 and be a little less reliant on subtitles.
Being NHS supplied they, along with a lifetime prescription for batteries, are entirely free. Why anyone in Britain would actually pay for hearing aids bewilders me.
The only two downsides I can think of so far are that I’ll now be even more capable of hearing that yappy dog from over the road, and never realised how horribly clacky this keyboard sounds when I type.
Small prices to pay, methinks, for being able to enjoy life a little more.
Stay safe !
